Margot picked up the first document, read it carefully all the way through, then lifted her eyes to his in a way that made him go still.
“That’s strange, Lucas,” she said, her voice perfectly, icily calm. “Why does my signature already appear on a massive transfer dated October of last year?”
The silence dropped over the room like a guillotine. Lucas went deathly pale, his hands trembling just enough for the notary to catch it.
One of the partners stopped breathing altogether for a horrible moment, and just as Lucas opened his mouth to cobble together some desperate answer, the heavy oak door began to swing open.
